Preemie Bloat.

Owen was a very busy little guy last night! We arrived at the hospital today and heard some good and bad news.

The good news: Owen took two bottles last night! He took one at 11pm with 10ccs and one at 2am with 20cc's! That is almost half of his feeding via a bottle - and he did great! We found out today the nurses all had a note written down that he was 35 weeks and that's why they were OK with starting to bottle him so quickly. He's only 32! So it's a good thing they were mistaken, or he wouldn't have even gotten a chance to show off his bottle eating abilities for a few more weeks. Now, he will get a lot more practice, because he has already proven he's great at eating from the bottle, so they will keep doing it. Yea! Due to the bad news below, we didn't push the bottle today. We'll continue it tomorrow if he's doing better.

The bad news: Owen has the preemie bloats. Apparently this is a common issue, but the poor guy's retaining water! His lower extremities were really bloated, so they spoke with the doctor and decided to give him a diuretic to remove the excess water. The retained water was also making it harder for him to breathe, so they increased his liter flow back to 2. It was pushed down to 1 last night, but since he was struggling they increased it back to two. The doctor told us he thinks the diuretic (over the next 24 hours) will remove the excess fluid in his body...including from his lungs. He thinks this will help his breathing overall, maybe even fixing his need to be on any oxygen. So we'll see how he does! Keep your fingers crossed!!
